Athelhampton

Details

Home to the Cooke family, this house dates from 1485 and is a magnificent example of early Tudor architecture. Sir William Martyn was granted a licence by Henry VII to enclose 160 acres of deer park and to build the fortified manor. His great hall, with a roof of curved brace timbers and an oriel window with fine heraldic glass is now one of the finest examples from this period. In 1891 Alfred Carte de Lafontaine (the then owner of Athelhampton) commissioned the building of the formal gardens.

The Grade 1 listed gardens which have won the HHA 'Garden of the Year' award surround the main house, with Elizabethan style ham stone courts. The famous 30 feet high yew pyramids dominate the great court and the 15th Century Dovecote is still home to a colony of beautiful white fantail doves. Water forms a recurring theme with pools, fountains and the River Piddle.

The house has an array of fine furniture from Jacobean to Victorian periods. The west wing gallery hosts an exhibition of paintings and sketches by the Russian Artist, Marevna (1892 - 1984) The collection of her works, painted mainly in the cubist style, includes pieces painted throughout her lifetime including her travels, life in Paris, her time whilst she lived at Athelhampton during the 1940's and 50's and her final years in Ealing. Our Historic House also has something like no other, A 77 seated plush Cinema, where we show a selection of films from September through to Easter, please visit our website for dates and screenings.
